James Halliday together with Jeremy Oliver are recognized as the foremost authorities on Australian wine.

- He began writing in 1976 and has contributed to more than 56 books on wine.
- He is the author of The Australian Wine Companion, the latest is his 2010 edition.
- In The Australian Wine Companion, he profiled over 1,400 wineries and set out tasting notes of over 5,800 wines from Australia.
